Boating

The lighthouse is a great place to visit by boat, whether that is a sailboat, powerboat, canoe or kayak. If plan to tie up at the lighthouse dock, please notify the Keeper in advance so arrangements can be made to accommodate your vessel.

  • Larger boats can tie up at the floating dock with permission of the Keeper. Another fixed dock can be used if one is careful with lines and allows for the rise and fall of the tide, which can be up to five feet.
  • Large effective fenders are necessary since our docks are vulnerable to wakes from the main river.
  • Canoes and kayaks are best launched at Tina Chorvas Park in Saugerties on the lower Esopus Creek below Cantine Dam at the end of East Bridge Street.
  • Boats hauled by trailer may be launched at Lynch's Marina (adjacent to Tina Chorvas Park), which charges a fee for launching and parking.

Esopus Estuary and Hudson River

The Esopus Estuary is a plume emanating from Esopus Creek into the Hudson River. The deepwater portion of the Esopus Esutary is spawning and wintering ground for the shortnose sturgeon, an endangered species. The entire estuary is an important nursery area for migratory striped bass, white perch, American shad, alewife, blueback herring and rainbow smelt. It is a prime spot for bird-watching. Migratory osprey rely on the estuary as a feeding ground in spring. Other raptors, waterfowl and songbirds also visit the area.
