Unique among the lights on the Hudson River, the Saugerties Lighthouse is the only one accessible from land. Visitors can walk out to the lighthouse on the half-mile nature trail, open dawn to dusk. Parts of the trail experience mild tidal flooding on a twice-daily basis, so come prepared or plan according. Consult the tidal chart for more details. The gentle trail travels among stands of willow and cottonwood trees, along tidal pools, and through patches of wildflowers, eventually opening onto the middle of the majestic Hudson River. Visitors can walk around the lighthouse and visit the adjacent island, the site of the original 1838 lighthouse.
Picnic facilities are available on the island, where benches and chairs are in place for relaxing and enjoying the views. A porta-john toilet is available for use at the lighthouse dock from April to October.
