On Halloween night of 1972, the light in the tower of the Saugerties Lighthouse was extinguished and replaced with a beacon atop a steel post. After a century as a sentinel, the building languished as a zombie property for years until the Saugerties Lighthouse Conservancy brought it back from the dead. It was relit in August 1990.
